Biography

Jim Thompson is a founding partner of Minerva Law, LLP. He focuses his practice in the areas of complex business and civil litigation, including partnership conflicts and contract disputes, and real estate matters. Additionally, Jim leverages his extensive litigation experience to assist companies as outside general counsel. In recent years, Jim has guided numerous cannabis-related businesses through all phases of their life cycle.

Jim has been selected as a Super Lawyer in 2021, 2022, and 2023, a Super Lawyer Rising Star in 2015-2018, named by the San Diego Business Journal as “Best of the Bar 2016,” and nominated as a Top Young Attorney by the San Diego Transcript in 2011.

Jim received his B.A., with honors, from San Diego State University. He earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of San Diego School of Law. He is admitted to the State Bar of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Central, Eastern and Northern Districts of California.

Fun Facts

Prior to pursuing a career in the law Jim attempted to set the record for most jobs before the age of 25 which included stints as a waiter, sailing instructor, casino employee, journeyman contractor, landscaper, customer service agent for a finance company, intern for a large financial services firm, and snowboard instructor.

Jim made a run at becoming a rock star as the bass player in the punk rock band “Chronic Meter”.

Was voted by his friends as most likely to watch the surf with a cup of coffee instead of actually paddling out.
